Research & Publication

Smart Traffic Light Control System with Emergency Vehicle Detection
and Boom Barriers Using Arduino

N. Koirala, T. Srivatanakul — IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech), 2025, Los Angeles, CA, USA

DOI: 10.1109/SusTech63138.2025.11025771

🎯 Motivation

Over 40% of U.S. traffic accidents occur at intersections. Emergency response delays of even seconds can result in severe injuries or fatalities. This research targets intersection safety, congestion, and delayed emergency vehicle prioritization using a low-cost intelligent control system.

⚙️ System Overview

The system uses dual Arduino controllers synchronized wirelessly to manage multi-intersection traffic flow. Sensors detect sirens and traffic density to dynamically adjust signal timing. Bluetooth override enables manual emergency control, integrating embedded systems, real-time logic, and coordinated software control.

📊 Results & Impact

The prototype achieved reliable emergency prioritization with < 2s response latency, zero red-light violations during testing, and over 90% reduction in false detections. This $6,000 CUNY-funded research was presented at IEEE SusTech (California), ERN STEM (Atlanta), and multiple research symposia, demonstrating strong real-world smart-city impact.
